Eskom’s former chief nuclear officer, Riedewaan Bakardien, will take up the position of CEO of the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) on April 1.

Bakardien has more than 20 years’ experience in the nuclear industry, where he has held various senior leadership roles, most recently as senior VP at Ontario Power Generation, in Canada, where he oversaw training, security, emergency management, and innovation for the nuclear fleet.

While chief nuclear officer at Eskom, Bakardien was called in to oversee all the operations of the Koeberg power station in 2021 after the general manager was suspended to allow for an investigation into outage schedule slippages.

Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and NRWDI chairperson Dorah Modise expressed delight at Bakardien’s appointment, which was approved by Cabinet in late February “subject to verification of qualification and relevant security clearance”.

“His extensive expertise in radioactive waste management and regulatory compliance positions him as an ideal leader for NRWDI,” the statement reads.
